Next in our lineup of the best wide-format inkjet printers is the powerful and versatile Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II. This large printer boasts a healthy feature set, including a PictBridge input that allows you to connect your digital camera directly to the device. It prints photos at a respectable speed (as it is photo-optimized) and it holds a large volume of paper media. Its print quality is relatively high and the help and support backing it is impressive.
Canon is a Japanese company that has been an established player in the imaging industry since the 1930s. The first printer produced by this company was the first device worldwide to use bubble jet technology. Since that time, Canon has continued to innovate and produce high-quality imaging products, including this professional-quality wide-format inkjet printer.
In the end, the Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II didn’t have the print quality, feature set or print speed of our top product, the Epson Stylus Photo 1400. It did, however, beat out a competitor in the Epson Workforce 1100 for the TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award with its higher media capacity and compatibility with the PictBridge connector. A few extra features, like CD/DVD printing, and a selection of additional help and support options would help this device in our rankings.
The maximized print DPI is slightly lower than that of our number one product, coming in at only 4800 x 2400 DPI. The quality is due largely to the slightly higher ink cartridge count, broadening the effective color range as well as increasing the resolution of the prints. Unfortunately, with eight individual ink cartridges at roughly $16 each, it will become quite expensive to replace them on a regular basis. For the print quality that this device produces, however, it will be well worth it.
A comparatively slow print speed of 1.5 ppm is only impressive in context. Since this wide-format inkjet printer is optimized for printing pictures, the fact that it can print a full-color, high-resolution photo in less than a minute is outstanding. The Epson Stylus Photo R1900, another photo-optimized printer in our lineup, is capable of the same 1.5 ppm print speed but only when printing a photo about half the size of the Canon’s 8 x 10. Standard documents will print more rapidly as they have less information to relay to the page, but the photo-producing speed of this printer is worth noting. It also accepts the largest standard paper size of 13 x 44”, making it ideal for printing banners and posters.
The PictBridge connectivity provided by this printer adds an exceptional amount of flexibility to this wide-format inkjet printer. The device does not come with the cable necessary to connect a digital camera. You must buy the cable separately.
The Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II is slightly larger than many of its competitors, measuring 26 inches wide by 7.6 inches tall and 13.9 inches deep. It also weighs a hefty 32.4 pounds, making it the heaviest printer in this lineup and a full seven pounds heavier than the Epson Stylus Photo 1400, our number one product. Make sure you have enough available desk space for this imaging heavyweight.
The Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II is one of the best wide-format inkjet printers in our lineup for ease of use. It is simple to set up; connect your device to your computer, install the printer using the convenient installation wizard and update the drivers. The drivers can be obtained from the Canon website. User reviews echo our sentiments on this wide-format inkjet printer’s ease of use; almost every user-submitted review on their website comments that it was exceptionally easy to set up and use.
Maneuvering and positioning this behemoth of a printer may be the only difficulty you encounter when using it. It is significantly larger and heavier than many of the other printers available. You can rest assured that virtually all difficulties with this printer will cease once you have it positioned where you want it.
An industry-standard one-year limited warranty comes with the purchase of this printer, insuring it against damages incurred during manufacturing. It will not replace devices damaged by user abuse. However, the warranty does cover malfunctions encountered during normal use.
Drivers for the printer are available on Canon’s website under the “Drivers & Software” tab of the product description page. To find drivers specific to your operating system, simply select your OS from the drop-down menu. On the resulting page are the drivers you will need to operate your printer as well as additional software downloads for printing and color management tools.
If you have a question that is not addressed by the FAQs section or the included user manual, Canon’s technical support is available via email and telephone. However, we found that we had few questions about the functions of the printer that could not be solved by referencing their printer documentation.
We were pleased with the quality of the Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II. It offered several beneficial features like the PictBridge interface capability. It produces high-quality photos at an astounding rate, holds more sheets of 8.5 x 11” paper than most models and offers above average customer support. It is quite a bite larger than many wide-format inkjet printers on the market today, but it will still function well once it is in position.
